The mayor just confirmed (10:20am EST) 50 people have been killed by the shooting in a gay club in orlando

(I’m listening to the conference live so that’s how I’m relaying this info)
So,
The FBI is calling this “domestic terrorism” (according to ABC news) and someone asked “is it a hate crime? Is it terrorism?” And the police oficer answered that they cannot label it as anything at this time because there is not enough information.

They are saying this may be the worst shooting in US history

it’s the worst in terms of loss of life. the deadliest us shooting until last night was the virginia tech attack, which killed 32 people.

the shooter’s name is omar mateen, a us born citizen with afghani parents. the fbi is speculating that he “may have had ties to radical islam” or w/e, but they don’t know enough to say for sure. but what we apparently know so far is:

• he lived 150 miles away from orlando
  
• this was during an ongoing gay pride event throughout orlando
• the gay club that was targeted (the pulse) “worked actively in the community to promote awareness of LGBT issues. The Pulse website described itself as ‘not just another gay club’”
  
• the pulse was holding a special pride event, so there were about 300 people inside at the time
• the firefight outside started with an off-duty cop who was working as security for the club
• when asked for comment, his father said that his son wasn’t very religious that he knew of, but mateen saw two men kissing in miami several months ago and became “very angry”

so (of course) the media is running with the whole “radical muslim terrorist” thing. but even if he was, based on the circumstances this seems like it was a targeted attack against the LGBT community.

it’s heartbreaking. if you live in orlando you can help by donating blood. but all the rest of us can do is have the 53 people wounded in our thoughts/prayers.
